Global Alliance of Soil Bioengineering Experts

GASBE is an international professional network of experienced practitioners in revegetation, soil stabilization and vegetation technology — not a trade association, not a buying group, not a certification body. Knowledge transfer and joint field trials are what it is for — not product sales or collective purchasing. SRBT is a founding member.

Origins

Why a network — and why in 2022.

There is a structural gap in the market for revegetation and soil stabilization: operational capacity exists, but the specific expertise on formulations, operating principles and site-specific system selection is barely accessible in any structured form. Existing associations and interest groups do not cover that need — their focus lies elsewhere.

In 2022 that led to the idea of founding a network built exclusively around experienced practitioners — people who work in application every day, not in product sales or association politics. SRBT's managing director was closely involved from the start.

Positioning

What GASBE is — and what it is not.

GASBE is deliberately informal. No association status, no formal certification structure, no membership fees for a listing. Members join on peer-assessed competence — new members are judged by the existing network on their field competence, not on turnover or equipment lists.

Material producers can have new products and formulations trialled within the GASBE network by experienced practitioners under real field conditions — that is a legitimate and valuable channel. What GASBE structurally rules out is using the network as a collective buying group — a practice that exists behind closed doors in other industry associations and undermines the independence of the exchange.

Structure & principles

Restrictive on the outside. Open on the inside.

The way the network is organized is what makes an open exchange of experience possible — with no market competition inside it.

One member per region at most

At most one member is admitted per country and region. That prevents internal competition and is the precondition for experience being shared openly — every member contributes region-specific knowledge without putting market share at risk.

Peer assessment instead of applications

New members are assessed by the existing network on their field competence. What counts is demonstrated practical experience in application — not certificates, association memberships or equipment lists.

Field validation as standard

In the GASBE context, laboratory results without field validation are not a sufficient basis for recommendations. Findings are validated on pilot areas under real project conditions — joint field trials are a fixed part of the network's work.

Two-way knowledge transfer

Every member brings field trial results from their own project area into the network and in turn benefits from findings in regions and climate zones outside their own reach.

Field trials instead of product sales

Material producers can have their developments trialled within the GASBE network by experienced practitioners under real field conditions — worth more than any laboratory test. What GASBE structurally rules out is using the network as a collective buying group or a covert sales platform.

GASBE members today are not only professional peers — they are recognized points of contact for funded projects, research and development institutions and engineering consultancies looking for specific expertise from practice.

Knowledge base

Project experience from every relevant climate zone.

The network brings together project experience from very different climate zones, soil types and vegetation systems — from high alpine sites through Mediterranean dry sites to tropical reclamation areas and arid extremes. Seed specifications, substrate assessments and formulation experience are shared within the network and validated through joint field trials under real conditions.

For SRBT, GASBE membership means direct access to validated experience from regions and conditions outside its own project area. Formulation approaches tested under field conditions in Scandinavia, the Mediterranean or South America feed into SRBT's system development.

Formulation development

Field trial data from the GASBE network feeds directly into SRBT formulation development — validated findings from climate zones and soil types outside our own project area.

Research partnerships

GASBE members are recognized points of contact for universities, research institutions and funded projects. SRBT contributes practical expertise and field trial areas to research collaborations.

International projects

Through the GASBE network SRBT has access to partner capacity in other regions — for projects that require a local presence outside Germany and Austria.
